immigration and family

There are a lot of problems happened due to immigration, the one big issue is alienation between the immigrants parents and their children. There are three main factors lead a alienation in the immigrants families. I will use Chinese immigrants as an example.

1.Dissonant Acculturation
After migration children learn English at a faster speed than their parents resulting in an acculturation gap or “dissonant acculturation” at home. Because of “dissonant acculturation” parents and children develop different, parallel dual frames of reference: parents tend to compare their children’s behaviors with children from China, while their children tend to compare their parents with their friends parents or what they see depicted in the U.S. media.

2.Cultural Perspectives
Sharp differences between Chinese and American parenting may increase dissonance at home, producing a parallel dual frame of reference between parents and children. Chinese parents are likely to be more control-oriented and demand more obedience from their children. Their children compare their parent’s views with that of the American parent who tends to emphasizes more communication, freedom, and less control in their relationship with their children.

3.High Academic Pressure
Chinese parents tend to have very high expectations for their children’s education which may contribute to their children’s reluctance to communicate with their parents.

immigration and globalization

I had mentioned that immigration is the one of the most important factors of globalization in the previous entry. Nowadays, immigration is a world wide phenomenon, and the question is: why do people move?

Based on the data, there are about 175 million international immigrants and refugees; and a large-scale internal migration taking place within many countries-- over 100million rural to urban migrants in China.

The main concepts of people moving are:

Immigration occurs because: geographic differences in demands and supply of
labor – wage differentiations.
Immigrants came because: microeconomic model of decision making: purely
cost and benefit calculations; go to wherever the net returns will be the greatest.

globalization and identity

The identities become more diversity since the world is globalized. There are more skin color than just white, black, yellow, or brown. There are a lot of mixed skin color. And there are still a lot of people who are white inside but colored outside. Such as Oreo, people who are black but white inside; coconut, people who are brown but white inside; and banana, people who are yellow but white inside. They are more comfortable with white culture and language than their own ethnic group. We call those kind of people "Ethnic flight".

But some people complain those "Ethnic flight" that they should know about their own ethnic culture and language, since they are not white.

There is no right or wrong, it just happened.

globalization and education

Education is a really important factor of globalization, especially in the modern society. Nowadays, if you want to survive, live a good live, you should be educated. and you have more competitors since globalized, not just the people in your school, city, and country; the whole world is your competitor.

Education is helpful to the development of a country. It can make the country become wealthier and wealthier. but there are something I consider about.

I admit that education will bring a country wealth, but is that good everybody is educated? Let's say everybody is well educated, but there are only a certain amount of jobs, so who is gonna be hired, and who is gonna be fired?

Avatar in China

There is a news about how popular Avatar is in China. This news shows that how our lives were influenced by globalization.

Couple years before, Chinese government didn't allow foreign movies play in China. Since globalization is speeding in whole world, Chinese government changed policy of importing foreign movies. Nowadays, Chinese government will pick some famous movies to play in China, but not all. It is improved a lot compared with before, even just few foreign movies were picked.

Also, Chinese people accept Avatar culturally. Chinese people didn't go to movie theatre to watch movie that often before, but since globalization affect our lives, people more like to go to movie theatre to watch foreign movies.

From this news, we can see that globalization really affect our daily lives deeply. Until now, there are still a lot of Chinese people are dying to see Avatar.

globalization and culture

Nowadays, you can see McDonald's everywhere when you walked in the streets. Does this mean anything? Yes, it means American culture spread to the everywhere in the world!

Some people considered this is Americanization since American culture is so popular in the world. Especially for young people, they eat McDonald's, they listen to Michael Jackson, the clothes they wear become more alike.

Are we gonna lose our own traditions? And become all the same in the all different countries.

the negative effect of globalization

Globalization benefits people's standard of living in many ways, but it brings many problems at the same time too.

First, globalization accelerates the spread of diseases, such as AIDS, SARS etc. Globalization just bring the diseases to every country, every city, and every place. It is getting harder and harder to control any kinds of diseases.

Second, globalization make the gap between rich and poor getting bigger. Rich become richer, poor become poorer. Since the developed countries have better technology than the developing countries, people want to invest in developed countries more. So the developed countries get the more benefits from the globalization in a economic aspect.

Even lots of people do not like globalization, but we have to accept it since globalization is speeding.

here is a video about globalization in a general way, easy to understand!

WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?

Nowadays, people talk about globalization all the time, so what is globalization? generally, "globalization is what happens when the movement of people, goods, or ideas among countries and regions accelerates" (Coatsworth, 2004).

Why and how globalization happens? There are four pillars of it:

1. the large scale of immigration

2. the global economic

3. new technologies

4. cultural transformation

since globalization, we know what's happened about Tiger Wood better than our neighborhood; We can eat Chinese food, Sushi, Korean food, Mexican Food, and more at Grandriver, where a main street in East Lansing; We can see all different colors people walk around at campus. This is how globalization impact our lives.

But do all the implications of globalization are positive?
